soak printer head in alcohol for 10 & dry before you BUY this or another printer
By BIBLE study
I found this suggestion on FEB 2 but couldn't find it again, quickly today, so here it is copied from the copy I made:

"Before you spend $45, try soaking the print head in Isopropanol Alcohol (IPA) for 10 minutes and allow it to dry. Install the print head and your current ink cartridges and turn on the printer. Allow the printer to go through its normal start up and allow the printer to go through its alignment process. The IPA should have dissolved any dried up ink in the print head and you should be able to print after this soaking. I live in AZ and this soaking worked great for me. Saved me the hassel of buying a new printer or any new parts!!
Good luck!!"

This now makes two people from AZ that found that this procedure works (I was raised in Phoenix).
Soak printer head in Iso Alcohol for 10 minutes & let dry [I dried w/paper towel carefully & used Q-tips & "air"].
I also used Q-tips dipped in Iso Alcohol to clean "downwards" on the plate behind the printer head [HP online instruction suggest their wipes but the direction is downward wiping].
Then I replaced my ink cartridges (1 new black, the other 4 w/different levels of ink) in several times going from right to left--the error message kept telling me to take out & put back in, the printer head & ink cartridges. So I turned the printer off & then on (like a computer restart) & allowed it to go through its complete preparation routine & the next message told me it was ready to do quality prints for me!

Because I had re-installed the software from the HP website the "spooling" (is that what is happening?) was very, very very slow, so I un-installed the software, re-downloaded the VISTA software & re-installed the printer software (full version) from my computer. This time it was complete & I used a 4x6 HP photo paper for print sample & out came a very nice print from my own "pictures" folder! I resumed printing on a current project, double sided on colored paper & I think the printer is as good as new!

2 years of using a printer & it probably makes sense to clean some of its parts--the alcohol in soaking bowl was dark in color from the beginning of the soak.
Why couldn't HP have offered this suggestion?
After I use up my remaining ink cartridges, I will probably buy the HP OFFICE PRO 8600, on sale even though it is large & I don't need all the features. Any printer that uses the HP 564 ink cartridge really drinks ink!

Thanks to the person from AZ who had a practical solution to my problem--my printer really didn't want to print black AND I couldn't get past the "alignment has failed" message.
If there were any contributing problems prior, it might have been that the printer pulled too many of pages to print on, thus the alignment problem & I wondered, later if it had completed its prep routine when I replaced the empty black ink cartridge. I attempted to print using another computer without success, so it was the printer's problem.
I really don't want to replace a part that costs 2/3 of what I paid for this printer!
Thanks also to Amazon.com for providing a place for very helpful REVIEWS!

Fast Shipping and it Saved My HP C310A Printer!!!
By Michael
My HP HP Photosmart Premium C310a Stopped printing Black out of the Blue! My printer has less then 225 Pages Printed and it stopped working. I Tried All the Fixes, Cleaning, New Ink, Resetting, Etc. and nothing worked. I could not get the printer to align or print black! So I Called HP and they told me my Printer was just outside of the Warranty Period. and could not help Unless I gave then $25 for Phone Support! (That is Ludicrous! ) All I wanted was to see if that were having problems with that model and if it was the print head. I would have Purchased a printhead from them! but the told me that they could not help unless I PAID! $25 So they can troubleshoot my problem. All they could tell me is that It might be the printhead but suggested maybe the printer is BAD and Suggested Buying a New Printer from Them. with their ReUp/Exchange Program. ! I Don't want another printer I wanted this one fixed! My printer had under 225 Pages Printed! and its Useless! And I WILL NOT GIVE THEM ANOTHER DIME OF MY MONEY BECAUSE HP CUSTOMER SERVICE STINKS! And They (HP) DO NOT STAN BEHIND THEIR PRODUCTS! So I found this Company on Amazon selling printheads and Gave them a shot! Purchased a New Print Head, and Put it in and It FIXED THE PROBLEM, IT ALIGNED The Printer (Before it would not) And Started Printing Black AGAIN! Everything was working normal again HURRAY!!!. If anyone has a problem similar to Mine and its a HP Photosmart - Try replacing the Print Head FIRST, for under $30 bucks (Less then 1 ink cartridge) It will extend the lift of your printer and you will be back in business again!

Again I Give 5 Stars for this Product as it was shipped quickly and worked as promised!

Fixed "Ink System Failure" on HP Photosmart Premium Fax (C309a)
By Mike R.
The 564 Printhead arrived in a plastic container that snaps closed and it was not sealed as I read noted in some other reviews, but this product is a print head and there is no need for it to be sealed since there is no ink to dry out. The product had no signs of previously being used whatsoever, no ink on the print head, in the channels or where the cartridges connect, so I have no reason to think that this is not a new item. The fact that there was no HP branded labeling may be a big deal for a couple people out there but caring about something like that is silly (to put it mildly), but if somebody thinks that everything they buy should be wrapped in the logo of a specific company then they should be buying from that company directly and not be using Amazon.com.

A HP Photosmart Premium Fax (C309a) had an error on the screen that said "ink system failure 0xc19a0041". I purchased this 564 Printhead (which arrived in less than a week), installed it in place of the old one, and the printer went through it's alignment with no problems.

Problem: Fixed

I would recommend anybody that has a problem with the print head on their printer buy this product, if that printer is compatible with this particular print head... but don't buy the last one in case I need another in the future.
